Figures as read on 19 October 2026
What each source says
| Source | Statement |
|---|---|
| Amtivo / British Assessment Bureau FAQ | On average, clients take approximately three to six months to get certified. |
| Citation ISO Certification | Typical run: 0 to 2 months scoping and gap analysis, then 2 to 6 months building documentation and evidence, then the certification audit. Also claims "as little as 45 days" with its help. |
| TUV Rheinland UK | The certification process "typically ranges from 4-8 weeks". |
Why they differ
The sources are measuring different things. TUV Rheinland describes the certification process; Amtivo and Citation describe the whole project including building the system. The long part is usually not the audit but having a system that has run long enough to show records. The sources do not publish a minimum running period, so ask your body what evidence it expects at Stage 2.
The cycle after you pass
An accredited certificate lasts three years. Surveillance audits happen at least annually, and a recertification audit closes the cycle. Amtivo says the certificate lasts three years from the start date and that you undergo an annual surveillance audit; TUV Rheinland UK lists annual surveillance and recertification within three years. Budget for the later years, not just the first audit.
The edition question
ISO 9001:2026 has been published. Ask your body which edition it will certify you to and what transition applies. See the transition guide.
